21c Museum Hotels will open its fifth property, located at 167 W. Main St. in downtown Lexington on Monday, February 29. It is an adaptive reuse of the 100-year-old Fayette National Bank Building (21chotels.com).
The Kentucky Foundation for Women is accepting nominations for their Firestarter Award for a Young Developing Artist. The Firestarter Award honors a young person (under 30) who shows meaningful promise in developing as a social change artist, whose work has the potential to create change for women and girls in Kentucky. Art events The Carnegie Center is hosting seven Tibetan monks from the Labrang Tashi Kyil Monastery in Dehradun, India, from Tuesday, March 1 through Saturday, March 5. The monks will be creating a sand mandala in the foyer of the Carnegie Center, and will present an evening talk and a childrens Tibetan Art Workshop. Other opportunities for the public include a lunchtime meditation and a hands-on opportunity to try sand painting (carnegiecenter.org).
Photographer Ted Wathen will have a free gallery talk on his photographs now on display in Coal 1979 on Wednesday, March 2 at noon. UofLs Photographic Archives Gallery, Ekstrom Library. UofLs Center for Arts and Culture Partnerships will host the conference Public Art and the City: Art as Social Action on Friday, March 4 at the Chao Auditorium in Ekstrom Library from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Free and open to the public (louisville.edu).

Kentucky Crafted: The Market is the Kentucky Arts Councils signature event produced each year featuring the highest quality art, craft, literature, music and food found in the state. The Market will be 9 a.m.-7 p.m. on March 5 and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on March 6 at the Lexington Convention Center. Tickets to The Market include access to the This is 50 exhibit, an exhibit celebrating the Kentucky Arts Council’s 50th anniversary. The exhibit features 38 Kentucky artists (artscouncil.ky.gov).
Reservations and tickets required: The Kentucky Historical Society and Frazier History Museum are teaming up to present “Claiming Space: Women and Fashion,” a conversation about how a woman’s fashion choices affect her success in politics and business. Featured speakers are Heather French Henry and Dr. Jennie Woodard. Dr. Amanda Higgins, associate editor of the Register of the Kentucky Historical Society, will serve as moderator. Monday, March 7 at 6-8 p.m. Cash bar and refreshments will be available. $5 general admission/free to members of the Frazier Museum or Kentucky Historical Society.
