April 26th is National Pretzel Day. Did you know that it is widely accepted that pretzels got their start in Germany by the European monks?
The unique knotted shape of a pretzel is believed to represent many purposes, from the Holy Trinity (the three openings representing the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit), arms folded in a prayer or posture of humility to becoming a symbol of union in Switzerland in 1614, with weddings of royal couples featuring pretzels to represent the bond of matrimony. According to legend, this may also be where we get the phrase “tying the knot” from.
Today, each American consumes about two pounds of pretzels every year. That equates to about 362 million pounds of pretzels eaten annually.
Here are a few restaurants that are known to have good pretzels – so get out and enjoy some this National Pretzel Day! (Restaurants are shown in no particular order.)
