The first words on Louisville Lip Service are spoken, not sung, an MC5-ian promise to make sure things get loud. “It’s riff time,” Andy Matter mutters before making good, as the opener “Prince Of Pieces” builds with giant, angular layers that form a post-punk swirl. Mixing hard rock’s ubiquitous soar with experimental elements makes the music rich and affable, although the album tends to drag a bit at times. The quartet is made up of Matter and three members of the psych-rock band New Bravado, which results in driving songs that deal in visceral rock and roll.
