Beauty can derive from limits. There is such a thing as too many options, too many directions to explore, too many choices to clutter the brain. Working within a set of rules focuses and sharpens the creative mind, leaving little room for the distractions that invariably come with unlimited freedom. Featuring members of Rachel’s, Sandpaper Dolls, Shipping News and King’s Daughters & Sons, The Young Scamels didn’t conceive Tempest from a blank slate. The album owes its existence to the band’s experience with Shakespeare’s play: providing music for the Actors Theatre production both tested and inspired the musicians on this record, but the group succeeds in adding their own stylistic nuances to what happens to the characters on stage, sculpting an elegant sonic companion that fits the spirit of a timeless work.
