Mike Linnig’s 9308 Cane Run Rd. Mike Linnig’s is celebrating its 100th season as a hub for delicious seafood and family gatherings. Originally established as a modest roadside stand in 1924, the restaurant has grown to a sprawling 20-acre venue along the Ohio River, capable of hosting up to 1,000 diners. The restaurant remains operated by the Linnig family and continues to be a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike. Known for its fried fish, onion rings, and classic family recipes, this century-old fish spot is practically a landmark for all Louisville residents.
Pat’s Steakhouse 2437 Brownsboro Rd. Pat’s Steak House has been serving classic, hand-trimmed steaks and Irish-inspired fare since 1958. Originally a 19th-century coach stop, the restaurant offers a nostalgic atmosphere with dark wood paneling, vintage photos and memorabilia. Pat’s features multiple private dining rooms, a seasonal outdoor patio and spaces ideal for events like rehearsal dinners. Still family-owned, the restaurant remains a beloved staple for locals and visitors alike, blending history and exceptional dining.
The Overlook 1153 IN-62, Leavenworth, IN The Overlook Restaurant in Leavenworth, IN is a dining destination that offers not just great food but also one of the most breathtaking views in the region. Perched on a bluff overlooking the Ohio River, the restaurant provides a panoramic 20-mile vista of the surrounding landscape, making it a favorite spot for both Hoosier and Louisville Metro locals and travelers. The menu is packed with comforting country classics like fried chicken, pork chops and chicken pot pie, and their cobblers are a must-try dessert. The serene setting, paired with the chance to watch river barges drift by, creates a uniquely memorable dining experience.
Captain’s Quarters 5700 Captain’s Quarters Rd. Captain’s Quarters is Louisville’s riverside destination for Seafood, International and American fare, cocktails, and sunsets. The restaurant features indoor and large outdoor seating, and a boat dock. Captain’s Quarters is perfect for dinners large and small, and has plenty of space for special events. While Captain’s Quarters opened in only 1987. The site has been used since the 1700s by early European settlers in the area. Facebook
Log Inn 12491 County Rd 200 E, Haubstadt, IN Log Inn is a family style restaurant serving country fare like fried chicken and mashed potatoes. The restaurant’s claim to fame is that Abraham Lincoln stopped there on route back to his home. Log Inn was built in 1825 and was first a Noon Day stage coach and trading post. Facebook
Dairy Kastle 575 Eastern Parkway Some people say they know it’s summer when they visit Dairy Kastle, the Louisville institution that opened in 1976. Besides ice cream, they also serve chili dogs, nachos, milkshakes, and other summer-favorite foods.
Ollie’s Trolley 978 South 3rd St Ollie’s Trolley is an Old Louisville classic that first opened in March 1973. Make sure to bring cash since this renowned burger and hot dog joint doesn’t take credit cards.
Kern’s Korner 2600 Bardstown Rd This local establishment was opened in 1978 and handed down to the Kern sons afterwards. Though they’ve retired now, the new owner carries on the family legacy. It’s a great place for a cheap bite with most burgers and sandwiches costing about $6-7.
Jack Fry’s 1007 Bardstown Rd. Jack Fry’s has been a Highlands staple since 1933, offering a refined menu of classic American bistro fare. Known for its cozy ambiance and live jazz music, the restaurant reflects its founder’s legacy, a man remembered for his hospitality and community involvement during Prohibition-era Louisville.
Check’s Cafe 1101 E. Burnett Ave. Founded in 1935, Check’s Cafe has been a Germantown institution for generations. This family-owned restaurant serves a comforting mix of American and German-inspired dishes, making it a go-to spot for hearty meals and a welcoming neighborhood atmosphere.
Oriental House 4302 Shelbyville Rd. Since opening in 1964, Oriental House has been a beloved Chinese restaurant in St. Matthews. Known for its classic dishes and retro-style decor, it’s one of the oldest Chinese restaurants in the Louisville area and a longtime favorite for dine-in and carryout.
Twig & Leaf 2122 Bardstown Rd. A Highlands landmark since 1962, Twig & Leaf is an old-school diner cherished for its timeless American menu and warm, nostalgic vibe. Located at the intersection of Bardstown Road and Douglass Boulevard, it’s a recognizable gathering spot for locals.
Best Hot Dog: Dairy Del 1516 S Shelby St. Dairy Del’s legendary hot dogs are a simple, delicious staple of the local food scene.
The English Grill at the Brown Hotel 355 W. Broadway Housed within the historic Brown Hotel, The English Grill (temporarily closed for updates) has been serving up Kentucky-inspired modern American cuisine since 1923. This Downtown dining destination is also home to the iconic Hot Brown, a dish created by the hotel’s chef in the 1920s, which remains a Louisville favorite to this day.
