However precious and popped-collar these New Yorkers appear, Vampire Weekend ultimately win out on top in the taste department. Rostam Batmanglij, Ezra Koenig, Chris Baio and Chris Tomson draw their inspirations from sources international: Bollywood, calypso, dub, reggaeton and third-wave ska coalesce into taut pop gems that bang and sway. They’re not the first to borrow from world, but it’s the way they distill it that matters. “California English” might be an argument for using something other than pitch correction, and the rhythm breaks on “Run” and “Giving Up the Gun,” and closing methodical sweetness of “I Think Ur a Contra” could soften those haters into an about-face.
