The Pacific Northwest has a history rich in its own brand of indie rock, and members of Quasi have carved a good chunk of that history out. Between the three: Sam Coomes, Janet Weiss and Joanna Bolme have had their hands on such definitive projects as Heatmiser, Sleater-Kinney, Elliott Smith and Built to Spill. While American Gong may sound like a product of that environment, at least comes by it honest. Aesthetically the sounds here might recall other works by its creators, but they are also well cured and by no means restrict Quasi from genuine, playful and exciting rock. At its core, American Gong is dirty little record driven by guitars and drums set on shaking your ass. You can trust that the members of Quasi know how records like that are made.
