Back for its second season, the West Louisville Farmers Market in California Park is making a significant move toward addressing food poverty this year since it now takes SNAP and EBT benefits.
The shift is a part of a bigger endeavor by Change Today, Change Tomorrow, the charity behind the market, to guarantee that every West End resident has access to fresh and healthy food.
The market is “making it easier to get your hands on fresh food,” with purchases directly supporting the nonprofit’s mission to end food insecurity. “They’ve been really focused on food insecurity and food sovereignty and having this market on a Sunday,” Cassia Herron, a plant vendor at the farmers market, said to WHAS11. “They’re committed to doing this for the next three years.”
Show your EBT card, get a voucher and then use it straightaway with any seller at the market for SNAP customers. At the end of the day, the merchants get repaid.
With federal funds and Community Farm Alliance support, consumers can quadruple their purchasing power—receiving food for just $20 in SNAP benefits valued at $40.
Through October 5, the market is scheduled every other Sunday and currently has more than 20 vendors registered. A $300,000 gift from an unidentified UK-based donor targeted at enhancing food justice and community health has helped vendor fees to be eliminated this year.
At the market’s entry, one finds a complete vendor directory. Visit Change Today, Change Tomorrow’s website for further information, to give, or to become a vendor.
