What The Louisville Ballet Has In Store For The Rest Of Its Special 70th Year

70 Years with the Louisville Ballet!

The Louisville Ballet  has announced its 70th anniversary spring season performance schedule. 

The spring schedule includes the recently added, “Program 4,” “Spotlight Series: Impressionism to Jazz” and “Sleeping Beauty.” Tickets are on sale now for all productions. 

“Louisville Ballet is thrilled to continue our 70th Anniversary Season return to the stage by bringing three innovative, dynamic, and powerful productions to our audiences this spring,” said Robert Curran, artistic director for Louisville Ballet, in a release. “We invite our community to join the celebration –  experience new world premiere choreography, works by ballet luminaries George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins, and collaborative performances with a range of Louisville-based artists and musicians, all performed live by our incredible Louisville Ballet dance artists.”

The ballet is launching its Dysart Award which is an annual prize that recognizes up-and-coming choreographers. “Program 4” includes new work by the inaugural Dysart Award winner, Anne Jung. “Program 4,” in addition to having choreo from the Dysart Award winner, includes choreography from the Louisville Ballet’s Brandon Ragland as well as performances from some notable local musicians and artists (Hannah Drake, Isiah Fish, Lance G. Newman II, and Carly Johnson).

A mixed-repertory production with a focus on artistic collaboration, Program 4 features works performed by Louisville Ballet artists with choreography by Robert Barry Fleming, Actors Theatre of Louisville’s Executive Artistic Director; Adam Hougland, Louisville Ballet Resident Choreographer; Brandon Ragland, Louisville Ballet Company Artist; and Anne Jung, 2021/2022 Dysart Award inaugural winner and Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company Artist. Guest artists include Louisville-based singer and songwriter Carly Johnson, and poets/spoken-word artists Hannah Drake, Isiah Fish, and Lance G. Newman II.

  • #fourwithsix: Choreography by Anne Jung (2021/2022 Dysart Award Winner), Music by Charlie Hayden + Pat Metheny 
  • I AM: Choreography by Brandon Ragland, Music composed by Ezio Bosso. With live spoken word performances by guest artists Hannah Drake, Isiah Fish, + Lance G. Newman II

March 3-5, 2022 | The Brown Theatre | Choreography by George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, and Andrea Schermoly (World Premiere) 

Launching Louisville Ballet’s new mixed repertory Spotlight Series, this season’s Impressionism to Jazz marks the musical connections between Impressionism and Jazz with iconic American ballet works – George Balanchine’s Emeralds and Jerome Robbins’ In G Major – combined with an exciting world premiere by Resident Choreographer Andrea Schermoly, featuring music by Louisville-based Jazz musician and composer, Dick Sisto. 

Spotlight Series: Impressionism to Jazz works include: 

  • Emeralds: Choreography by George Balanchine. Music: “Pelléas et Mélisande” + “Shylock” by Gabriel Fauré 
  • In G Major: Choreography by Jerome Robbins. Music: “Piano Concerto in G Major” by Maurice Ravel 
  • World Premiere Work: Choreography by Andrea Schermoly. With Music Composed and performed live by Louisville-based Jazz Composer and Musician, Dick Sisto 
NEW THIS SEASON: SLEEPING BEAUTY 

March 31- April 2, 2022 | The Brown Theatre | Choreography by Adam Hougland (World Premiere) | Music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky | Scenic Design by Marion Williams | Costume Design by Alexandra Ludwig 

Working alongside frequent collaborator and scenic designer Marion Williams, Louisville Ballet Resident Choreographer Adam Hougland brings a vibrant, reimagined vision to this ballet classic – an all-new production inspired by stylized mid-century glamor and mixed with a dash of humor and fairy-tale romance. All new sets and costumes. Classical music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky will be performed by a live orchestra.
