Daikaiju

The Japanese word “kaiju” translates to “strange creature,” which couldn’t possibly compliment the sound of Daikaiju, surf metal legends from Alabama, any better. Continuing a tradition started by bands like Man-or-Astroman? or Servotron, Daikaiju doesn’t just put on a great show, they live that persona as monsters of surf metal. That their interview remains in character is either indicative of their dedication to the bit, or they’re just that weird. You decide.

LEO: How did you all get started?

TEAM DAIKAIJU: DAIKAIJU STARTED WITH DELICIOUS LATE AFTERNOON BRUNCH!

LEO: How have people responded to the concept? I’m talking about heavy surf rock obviously, and nothing else.

TD: BIG SMILES CROSS MANY FACES!

LEO: How do you describe your music to people who may be unfamiliar?

TD: BATTLE SURF SEX METAL!

LEO: What effect, if any, does environment have on your music?

TD: DAIKAIJU LISTEN TO ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS MUSIC SOMETIMES!

LEO: Why instrumental? Have you all ever worked with vocals or vocalists?

TD: ALL DAIKAIJU ALWAYS SINGING BUT VERY DIFFICULT TO HEAR OVER UNRELENTING SONIC ATTACK!

LEO: What constitutes a good show and why? What’s the best show you’ve played? Worst?

TD: DAIKAIJU LIKE WELL-CRAFTED SHOWS MADE WITH HEART AND BRAINS AND OTHER DELICIOUS ORGAN MEATS! BEST AND WORST CHANGE DAILY IN NETFLIX QUEUE!

LEO: What do you all look like under your masks? Has anyone ever tried to stop you from shopping in their store when you wore your masks?

TD: FIRST YOU TELL DAIKAIJU WHAT YOU LOOK LIKE UNDER YOUR MASK! DAIKAIJU SHOP ONLINE!

LEO: Does anyone in the band have powers? From your names it would imply that you do. How are those powers manifested in your music?

TD: SOME DAIKAIJU HAVE PRESCRIPTIONS FOR MYOPIA! NO REAL LINK BETWEEN LENSE POWERS AND PERSONAL PLAYLISTS!

LEO: What defines ultimate success for Daikaiju?

 TD: GOD MODE!

You can catch Daikaiju Sunday at The Cure Lounge with Touch AC and the Smoke Shop Kids, The Screaming Hand, and Boner City. Doors are at 8pm. $5.
