Two fatal shootings and a fatal stabbing over Memorial Day weekend brought the city’s homicide count to 47 for the year, not including Shively, Jeffersontown and St. Matthews — about one every three days.

Pro-student trustees blocked, at least for now, President James Ramsey’s proposed 5-percent tuition hike, which his staff says is needed to avoid an $18-million deficit. One trustee suggested the UofL Foundation spend some of its tens of millions to offset any hike, according to a Courier-Journal report. We say some of Ramsey’s $1.6-million-to-$2.8-million compensation could help too.
Bevin’s potty mouth, part two (Thorn)
Gov. Matt “Bevinator” Bevin is predictable, if nothing else. Kentucky is joining 11 other states in suing the federal government over something really important — who gets to pee and change into gym shorts where. “The Obama administration’s transgender policy ‘guidelines’ are an absurd federal overreach into a local issue,” Bevin said in a statement.

Good job, Bevin! The governor has announced a new program to help young people transition from foster care to real life. The Fostering Success job-training program will help the young adults learn computer and customer service skills before they meet with career and college counselors. It uses federal money, the CJ says. Is that an “absurd federal overreach,” too? Doh!

We are sad that Abbey Road on the River is moving across the river next year, if for no other reason than we liked listening to Beatles covers playing outside of our downtown office. But seriously, we hate to see the city lose a music festival.
Doctor Who? (Thorn)
Sen. Mitch “No!” McConnell’s memoir, “The Long Game,” was released last week. Is it coincidence that his book shares a title with a “Doctor Who” episode in which an editor and alien control humanity by manipulating the masses through the news media?
