Rumor & Innuendo

Cards’ dance card.
Bottom line to jitterbug in the NC2A: Louisville needs to win out at home. If the Cards can beat UConn and steal a W at Pitt or Marquette, they need to get to the Big East semis. Otherwise, they need to make the final and probably prevail in the Garden.

Not so Sonny summer.
Sonny Vaccaro, the guy who turned college hoops into the shoe advertisement it is today, the guy who delivered Francisco Garcia to U of L, is retiring from the summer camp/shoe biz.
A matter of Caracter.
Derrick who? Hear me now and believe me later, this former 9th grade wunderkind will never don a Cardinal uniform again. Ellis Myles may be a lot of things, but a magician ain’t one of ’em.

Hawaii was hosed.
Gosh, a visiting team was screwed out of a victory and it wasn’t even in Cameron Indoor. Hawaii had Nevada beat Saturday night. The Rainbow Warrior’s Ahmet Gueye was mugged and left for dead by Nick Fazekas, but still made the winning basket with five seconds left and a free throw to come. Then the zebras changed the call, erasing the score. Coach K would have been so proud.

Fondness for Phil on the wane.
Didn’t this used to be exclusively hoops season? Let’s talk pigskin anyway. It’s always been so down in Big Orange country, where it’s pigskin über alles, college basketball’s winningest coach (that would be Pat Summitt) and shirtless Bruce Pearl notwithstanding. It looks like the Vols are gonna have another boffo recruiting class. Which simply raises the ire of those Rocky Top-lovin’ fat cats who are still PO’d over the losing record in ’05 and — egads — four losses last season. Phil Fulmer, I’m told, is a dead man walking if his Volunteers don’t make a BCS bowl next campaign.

Crimson Tide potty mouth.

New ’Bama coach Nick Saban was caught on tape referring to an LSU fan as a “coonass.” Now that’s an SEC guy.

New flavor of the month.

Rutgers is already scheduled for at least four ESPN football games next fall.

Get there early.
U of L fans need to get to the Georgetown game early. The Denny Crum Court will be unveiled in a ceremony before tip-off at 6:45 p.m.
