Bistro New Albany, 148 E. Market St., (812) 949-5227, www.bistronewalbany.com. Occupying much of the ground floor of the old New Albany Inn at Market and Bank streets, the Bistro combines excellent fare, comfortably upscale surroundings and the kind of service that makes you feel right at home. Save room for the Lemon Buttermilk Sorbet, a Bistro New Albany invention. (Reviewed 9/20; Rating: 90)

 

Jerusalem Café, 1907 S. Fourth St., 635-6767. Located in the shopping center just west of U of L’s Belknap Campus, this cafe speaks Middle Eastern with a Palestinian accent. All the classics — Baba Ganush, Tabouli, hummus and falafel — make for quick meals with fresh, clean and balanced flavors. (Reviewed 9/27; Rating: N/A)

 

Primo, 445 E. Market St., 583-1808. Bim Deitrich’s restaurant just unveiled its seasonal menus for autumn, featuring many goodies, including a Northwestern Italian-style dish of wide ribbon pasta with braised lamb ragu and mushrooms. The Insalata di Mare (“seafood salad”) makes the heart of a shellfish lover go pitty-pat. (Reviewed 10/04; Rating: N/A)

The Cutting Board recently moved a few doors up Goose Creek Road to the more spacious quarters that had formerly housed Hungry Pelican. The expanded menu includes a broad range of main courses, including a grilled portobello mushroom dish and a grilled lobster tail, shrimp and scallop “seafood delight.” (Reviewed 11/01; Rating: 79)

 

Pig City BBQ, 12003 Shelbyville Rd., 244-3535, www.pigcitybbq.com. If pigmeat is what you crave, head on over to the new barbecue joint out in the East End. Pig City BBQ seasons with a special rub and smokes the meat for up to 24 hours with cherry wood, which imparts a slight sweetness to the meat — especially the chicken. Fresco Southwest Grill & Pizza, 2047 Lytle St., 776-6077. This new Portland pitstop offers you a pick of Mexican or Italian dishes — or, if you like, a little of both — in a sparkling, inviting space that looks a bit like a fast-food franchise. Mexican fare includes the standard tacos, burritos and such, while the Italian menu features pizza, spaghetti, Italian sausage sandwich, chicken parmesan sandwich and Italian fries.
