From the first drummer of My Morning Jacket, J. Glenn’s new solo album Long Time No See displays his talents as a one-man band. Tactics vary: “Chinese Eyes” is a slick, synthy composition, where “Haunted Ways” is country acoustic guitar and lone kick drum. “Balding Eagle” is a competent rocker and contrasts with the lonely harmonica on “Zombie Heaven for Me.” Folkies will latch onto “Wild Dog,” though it does miss the mark compared with other tracks on the album. Overall, Glenn’s record is an impressive expression of freedom, an effective statement, and a good way to take a piece of that folky blues sound home.
