There is a menacing vibe to the production on KaBoom Vipin that elevates the compositions beyond a lot of contemporary hip-hop. This is dense and meaty, stacking shoegaze ambience over boom-bap beats and verbose rhymes. Lyrically, Jasun and Kogan have developed their own shared lexicon, a world that evokes yams, bandanas and shrimp, all call backs to moments in their career. But, there is real life in these seven tracks. The back and forth interplay informs the lyrical interactions on the album less call and response, and more of each rapper complimenting each others thoughts. There is an earnest sincerity that blurs the lines between social commentary, and just having a good time. Syd Bishop
