The Basics of Bharatanatyam South Central Regional Library Free | 6:30-7:30 p.m. Shyama Iyer, now a WKU college student, has been trained in Indian dance and music since she was three years old. At this workshop, she’ll teach the basics of bharatanatyam, a classic dance form that involves squatting low, beating the feat and using the hands, to convey a story. The dance form is based in the Hindu religion. This one could actually include prizes. At a poker run, you’re handed cards throughout the race. Those with winning hands at the end receive a surprise. August Flea Off Market: In the Highlands Highlands Community Campus No cover | 4:30-5 p.m. For the weekend, The Flea Off Market is moving from its usual spot at Fresh Start Growers’ Supply to The Highlands neighborhood. On Friday, there will be food trucks, craft beer, cocktails and a concert with Bingo Rider, who will be playing classic country covers starting at 7 p.m. The market continues into Saturday and Sunday.170th Annual St. Joe’s Picnic for the Kids Pre-Party St. Joseph’s Children’s Home Free | 5-11 p.m. There’s a lot going on at the St. Joe’s Picnic Pre-Party: music from The Louisville Crashers, arts and crafts, a celebrity dunk tank, a corn hole tournament, rides and inflatables, a prize wheel, pull tab and gambling booths, raffle booths and food from plenty of vendors, including Joella’s Hot Chicken, Red Top Hotdogs and plenty of chain restaurants such as Papa John’s Pizza and Nothing Bundt Cakes. Parking and admission are free, but $1 tickets are needed to participate in all of the activities. Proceeds go to the St. Joseph Children’s Home for kids who have been removed from their homes, but the event is also a chance to learn about becoming a foster parent and for alumni to reunite with their former peers and St. Joseph staff.
PaoliFest JayCee Park, Paoli, Indiana Free | 5-11 p.m. About an hour away from Louisville is the small, Indiana town of Paoli. And in that small, Indiana town, something big is happening. Paoli Fest, a two day art and music festival, features several well-known Louisville bands, including Bridge 19, which plays on Friday. Also catch Lexington’s Joslyn & The Sweet Compassion and enjoy food from Pollo Louisville and other regional vendors. On Saturday, the festivities will be all day with art booths and demonstrations.
The Louisville Zoo Movie Series: ‘Black Panther’ The Louisville Zoo $5 admission ($6 parking) | 6-11 p.m. Watch a movie with the animals. “Black Panther” will be projected onto the zoo’s large, inflatable screen. Beforehand, “The Zoo Crew” will provide free entertainment. Refreshments will also be available for purchase. Just don’t forget to bring a blanket or lawn chair to lounge on.
Bey vs. Jay: A Night of Music by The Carters Mercury Ballroom $5 | 9 p.m.-Midnight Beyoncé and Jay-Z are undeniably a music power couple, with 45 Grammys and 11 years of marriage between them, but they’ve also been known to have their, um, disagreements — with intense studio albums to prove it. That’s why this event is so appropriate a tribute for the stars of hip-hop. Local DJs Lil Jerry and Samosa will be warring with tunes from the pop culture giants, but also collaborating to make sure the night is one nonstop dance party. “Now that reconciliation is possible, if we’re going to heal, let it be glorious.”
