Whitey Morgan’s grizzled baritone and sharp, straightforward country is about the closest you can get to the genre’s outlaw past without nonsensically and completely copying it. There’s clear inspiration, which provides a stark difference to the sort of overproduced, vapid country music that’s easy to find on the radio, but he carries a charisma (and employs a really good band) that gives him his own little space and soul within the style. A machine that was created to be heard live.
