John Darnielle — the singer-songwriter/driving force behind The Mountain Goats — has managed to successfully run through different sonic terrains during the last two decades, and the main reason why is that the base stays the same: his punchy, high-pitched and weird delivery that is cold, yet still manages to build and drop, delivering vocals that seem to both say nothing and everything. That brilliantly convoluted structure — plus him being a genuinely sharp writer — makes everything seem profound, or at least blurs the lines. Like low-budget professional wrestling, which is a dominant theme on the new album, “Beat The Champ.” Nobody has made it seem this poetic since Vince McMahon.
