State Champion’s fiery hybrid rock has as much in common with punk or ‘90s underground as it does with roots music, containing the grit and urgency to almost align stylistically with alt-country heroes such as Whiskeytown or Uncle Tupelo, but you can also hear Pavement. It’s a fresh-air mixture of familiarity and forward thinking and it’s good music to let loose and refresh your brain after a day of overeating and listening to other people’s opinions. Phantom Familiar Jaylebyrds and Mazozma Theatre Duo open.
