“Who am I?” That question starts many on a quest for personal understanding. Artist Stan Squirewell was no different, especially after he learned his ancestry was not what he thought it was. These new works by the painter, photographer, installation and performance artist ask “from whose perspective history is written. Marginalized communities are often overlooked and omitted from history in general. The history I was taught did not have my ancestry represented. The main thing I want the viewer to take away is to question what you think you know, what you’ve been told and what you believe.” Moremen Gallery is also showing new work by Megan Lightell through Oct. 15.
