‘Southern Symbols: Remembering Our Past and Envisioning Our Future’

How do you feel about Confederate memorials and flags? The Speed Art Museum is offering timely discussions that dovetail with its two exhibitions, “Southern Accent: Seeking the American South In Contemporary Art” and “Southern Elegy: Photography from the Stephen Reily Collection.” “As Louisville, like many other cities, takes a long and careful look at how its past is remembered through its public artworks, I am proud that as a museum we can offer a space of safe and civil dialogue,” said Miranda Lash, Speed curator of contemporary art. Friday’s events end with keynote speaker David W. Blight, discussing how the feelings behind the Confederacy just won’t go away. On Saturday, see Sonya Clark’s performance piece, “Unraveling,” with LEO Weekly writer Minda Honey leading a discussion and writing workshop on it.
