Sure, Aaron Livingston — aka Son Little — is influenced by elements from the worlds of blues, soul, gospel, indie and pop, but he twists and tears those genres and their barriers to the point where he can mold something that doesn’t rely on tropes or gimmicks or nostalgia. There’s nothing overly flashy about Son Little, as he seems to appreciate the subtle and nuanced aspects of music more than the dramatic ones, but this project is something interesting, something that looks forward instead of through the rearview.
