It’s always interesting to see artworks from generationally separated family members. They usually contain echoes and themes that bounce back and forth between the pieces, showing stylistic cues that help establish lineage. “Portal: The Space Within” is a great example of how this works. The show is a collaborative sculpture exhibition featuring works from Fred Wiesener and his daughter Catherine Wiesener. Fred Wiesener sculpts with a hand in the Art Deco world, crafting beautiful flowing figures, draped in pattern reminiscent of the 1920s. His daughter Catherine Wiesener takes a more contemporary approach to her work, using layered porcelain to produce vibrant relief landscapes that contain the flowing expressiveness of her father’s work but makes it uniquely her own.
