‘Paris Is Burning’ At Speed Cinema

The category is… legendary documentaries. This weekend, the Speed Art Museum screens “Paris is Burning,” the groundbreaking documentary that dives into the New York ballroom scene, a nightlife center for LGBTQ+ people of color and not to mention show-stopping looks, voguing and family. While featuring icons such as Venus Xtravaganza and Pepper LaBeija, the documentary also grapples with the AIDS crisis and fight against homophobia and transphobia. After Friday’s screening, Jaison Gardner of the “Strange Fruit” podcast on WFPLwill lead a discussion. —Emma Rubin
