J.K. Rowling’s thunderbolt-scarred schoolboy may have made Young Adult Speculative Fiction into a bookseller’s category too hard to ignore — but before that was Philip Pullman’s “His Dark Materials,” and then the “Hunger Games.” We may never return to a time when one Narnia-like world per generation unites readers of all ages. Attempts to build the like now show up regularly. This week, Carmichael’s hosts a Louisville prodigal who’s come back home and is making a case for her own impact in the YA world. Cole’s new novel “A Conspiracy of Stars” has timely themes — clashing worlds on opposite sides of scientific knowledge and indigenous/imperialist politics — and the writing is strong.
