Nikolaj Christensen

Glassblowing 101 by Nikolaj Christensen: “Mastery is only achieved through hard work. It comes along with figuring out how to maintain focus despite sweltering heat, or burns, cuts and innumerable other painful distractions that go hand-in-hand with life in a hot shop. Truly, the successes of our art form are measurable in blood, sweat and tears, in the most literal sense of the words.” That’s one of the best in-the-trenches explanation of glassblowing I’ve heard. Stripped of its glamour, art is creativity mixed with a heavy dose of manual labor. Most of us are in awe of the finished project — and as Christensen’s exhibition shows, his work is indeed awe-inspiring — but remember to appreciate the abundance of sweat. The opening reception is during the Sept. 7 Republic Bank First Friday Hop from 5 to 8 p.m.
