Louisville is hosting its first black rodeo this weekend, with over 200 African-American cowboys and cowgirls there to entertain and compete. They will vie for prize money in such categories as bull riding, steer wrestling, bareback riding, calf roping, team roping, bull riding and barrel racing. “The rodeo is open to all contestants that want to compete and to all fans that want to attend. Black rodeo is just a term used to showcase the African-American cowboy and cowgirl,” according to the Southeastern Rodeo Association. “The Association is committed to keeping the cowboy way of life and upholding the important contributions the African-American cowboys played in helping tame the Old West.”
