Joyce Manor, a pop-punk throwback that borrows from skate punk and avoids the pitfalls of late-era emo, shares a lot of common ground with the band Modern Baseball. Diet Cig creates confessional, straight-forward songs that are as fun as they are serious, playing like the soundtrack to a coming-to-age indie film. Tiny Moving Parts mixes early emo’s sensibilities with math-rock’s complexities. And Louisville’s Boner City makes gritty, two-minute throwback punk songs that are catchy and wild and really good.
