Has anyone heard that we might be on the verge of a new Cold War? We’re still learning what happened during the last one! Case in point: A pair of underground escape routes were created and used the year after East Germany built the Berlin Wall. Television networks NBC and CBS were involved, along with enterprising freedom-lovers on both sides of the wall, plus the Stasi (East Germany’s secret police) and a not-so-helpful Kennedy administration. Author Greg Mitchell has “dug up” this story, which recently came to full light from previously-secret documents. The library is hosting Mitchell’s reading/signing to promote “The Tunnels — Escapes under the Berlin Wall and the Historic Films the JFK White House Tried to Kill.” There’s no charge for this event, but you must go to the library’s website to get free tickets.
