A new-wave innovator, Gary Numan set the tone for bands such as Nine Inch Nails, as his work in dark synth-pop helped to open the gate for industrial rock. First active in Tubeway Army in the late ‘70s, followed by a solo career, Numan has continued to make chilly, ominous and atmospheric music that manages to feel subtle and robotic, as well as explosive and deeply human.
