‘Fire & Femininity’

Flame Run is presenting a gender-specific show. Why? The National Museum of Women in the Arts states 51 percent of visual artists today are women. That sounds like we do not need to show female-only exhibitions anymore because women have finally reached equality in the visual art world. Unfortunately, no. NMWA also lists recent data that revealed only 25 percent of solo gallery shows in New York City featured women (I think the numbers are higher regionally). “Fire & Femininity” is distinctive in another way too: It’s showing the paintings of Anessa Arehart, surrounded by the work of a dozen glass artists. The June 3 opening reception is during the First Friday Trolley Hop, and it will feature glassblowing demonstrations beginning at 6 p.m.
