The title of UofL Professor Dawn Heinecken’s talk taking place this week at Ekstrom Library —“So Tight in the Thighs, so Loose in the Waist: Embodying the Female Athlete Online” — is partially sourced from the tweets of women athletes. The three women soccer players who tweet from @SoccerGrlProbs, are among many women athletes who’ve hashtagged about their sartorial struggles: #TightInTheThighs #LooseInTheWaist. Frustrated by the clothing industry’s thigh-gap fixation and refusal to acknowledge muscular women’s bodies, athletes have taken to social media to issue calls for action, to commiserate, and, in Professor Heinecken’s view, “to negotiate the conflicting demands of emphasized femininity and athleticism.” Free and open to the public, Heinecken’s talk is part of the spring 2017 Social Change lecture series on “Sports & Social Change.”
