Grief — a harsh word for a harsh time. Derek Phillips uses his art to help his bereavement. “I started painting in early 2017 when my brother died,” he said. “He was the true artist in the family, and I’m attempting to continue that legacy in my own way.” The Clarksville painter is new at the biz, stating his works are “an adventure” — what he sees in his mind and what arrives on the canvas are “what my own limitations will allow.” But this act of painting is his connection to his brother, expressed in the title of the exhibition, “Curative Compositions”.
