‘Common Thread’ brings together four gifted, fiber-based artists to tackle issues of gender roles and to challenge the historical devaluation of “women’s work.” Irene Mudd explores her matrilineal heritage by knitting memorial portraits of the women of her family and women of history. Brooks Vessels brings together weaving, performance and video to expose and subvert traditional notions of female rituals. Accomplished embroiderer Lindsey Cummins alters photographs and installations to question our relationship with photographs as memories. Using whimsical papercutting art, Monica Stewart creates garments and objects to illustrate female agency and the family in dysfunction. The opening reception is from 6-9 p.m. Friday, June 1.
