STAFFPICK: ‘Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads’

The drive along Third Street has gotten more interesting. The Speed Art Museum has expanded its borders past its glass walls, letting us see art for free. The outdoor art installation “Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads” by contemporary Chinese artist/activist Ai Weiwei is on continuous view in front of the museum for the next 10 months. The 12 bronze animal heads are from the Chinese astrological calendar. They were created by Weiwei in 2010 and began traveling the following year. The heads have been shown in 23 locations, including the Smithsonian Institution’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., the National Gallery in Prague, Czech Republic and Osterreichesche Galerie Belvedere in Vienna, Austria.
