Christopher Ottinger’s art is a form of media archaeology, although he prefers to be labeled an alchemist. “In my own practice, I similarly make use of and reference to pre-cinematic and forgotten forms of media,” he said. “Instead of base metals and noxious potions [of alchemy], however, my materials consist of cathode ray tubes, lenticular arrays, video projections, and the accouterments of the mad scientist’s laboratory.” His goal is to make us realize there’s a continuous line from early forms of moving images, such as wall shadows and Zeotropes, to today’s video games. Ottinger, formally a filmmaker, is also curious what the future of media will bring to our lives.
