‘Before …
A Retrospective in Stitching’
by Bette Levy

This exhibition is a stitch in time (insert groan here). While I know it’s a bad pun, combining the words embroidery with retrospective just led me there. Textile artist Bette Levy’s work time-travels back to 1994, and then zooms us forward to 2014, with multiple style changes along the way. She’s a whiz at “painting” with silk thread. “As a child, I learned about creative art and needlework from my mother and grandmother,” Levy said. “They were always creating with their hands, and I grew up surrounded by … magical stimuli that delighted my senses and spurred my imagination. While I have worked with a wide array of textile techniques, … I always return to my stitching.”
