‘BDSM and the Queer Family’ by Kevin Warth

In modern society, the definition of family is fluid. While this may have conservatives foaming at the mouth, gone are the days where it meant dad, mom, two kids and a dog. Louisville photographer Kevin Warth adds yet another component to the diversity mix, highlighted in his one-night-only, solo show “BDSM and the Queer Family.” “In this series, I [photographed] BDSM practitioners in the language of family portraiture and examine alternative meanings of ‘family,’” he states. “Normality is not fixed, but polysemous — similarly, family is open to multiple interpretations. How can queer individuals make sense of the concept of family when it has become synonymous with marriage in the moderate gay movement?”
