Are you willing to take a chance on watching a new author’s voice mature? Both reader and writer invest time and other resources to make this happen, of course — but that’s how storytellers develop. Louisville native Farrell is marketing “Merciful Shock,” a suspense tale intended to be first of a series. Protagonist Melody Green is an “accidental sleuth” who comes upon a murder scene in her neighborhood. Her curiosity can’t let it go, and that might lead her to become a victim herself. Much of this self-published novella is first-person and seems semi-autobiographical, and the author is still learning how to prioritize and edit so that the details build into the rhythms of scenes and chapters. But Melody’s best-friend-who-wants-to-be-more knows a good thing and stays by her side — and patient readers might become similarly loyal.
