Look at the title of Abbott’s newest: “The Ghosts of Eden Park: The Bootleg King, the Women Who Pursued Him, and the Murder That Shocked Jazz-Age America.” Sounds like the plot’s been laid out before you crack the spine. But this author is a solid pro, and she has found a multifaceted gem of a true crime story. You might want to read this because you’re a Roaring Twenties fanatic. Or you might just like to dip your toes in real-life seedy tales of sin. Either way, this book delivers. But the investigators of the newly-formed FBI were his real adversaries in more ways than you might think. —T.E. Lyons
