Time Slip Theatre will open their musical “Cruel Intentions” on Jan. 7. The musical is an adaptation of the 1999 film starring Reese Witherspoon. The play will run at Art Sanctuary — while the theater group prepares to convert their new space into a black box theater.
According to a press release, “‘Cruel Intentions: The ‘90s Musical’ tells the story of Sebastian and Kathryn, two nefarious high-school Manhattan socialites who work to manipulate and maneuver Annette, a new student, in one of their villainous conquests. But when Sebastian struggles to reconcile his and Kathryn’s sinister ways with the purity and innocence of Annette, Kathryn’s wicked game comes to a life-changing climax. Featuring such 1990s pop songs as ‘Every You, Every Me,’ ‘Bye Bye Bye,’ ‘Just a Girl,’ ‘I’m the Only One,’ ‘Iris,’ ‘Bittersweet Symphony,’ and more, ‘Cruel Intentions’ is a hysterical and seductive send-up of all the unhinged yet refined debauchery of the wealthy ‘90s.”
The play will be directed by Zachary Boone and be performed from Jan. 7-15 at Art Sanctuary located at 1433 S. Shelby St. The show is not recommended for those under 16. Tickets are available on the Time Slip Theatre Website.
In addition to the debut of the new show, Time Slip Theatre has finally secured its own home. The group has taken over the former Lettersong Calligraphy Studio at 1501 Story Ave. in Butchertown. The space currently serves as a rehearsal hall for adults and after-school students but will be renovated to serve as the main hub for the theater group. Time Slip Theatre is a 501(c)3 organization whose mission is to “enhance the cultural landscape of Louisville while increasing arts education accessibility to students.”
After the run of “Cruel Intentions” the group will produce “The Rocky Horror Show” at Play from April 29-30 and will close their season with “Once” in June. “The Rocky Horror Show” is the original play that was adapted into “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” of legendary cult film fame.
