Thorns & Roses: The Worst, Best & Most Absurd

Mitch gets pegged  |  Rose

Four Pegs blasted Public Enemy on an outdoor speaker at U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell while he dined across the street at Sarino in Germantown. He then fled as protesters shouted: “No comfort for fascists!”

No axes… but Guns? OK!  |  Thorn

While protesters stand vigil outside of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) offices downtown, police have made it clear that you cannot take your sword to the protest, among other things. Nuance of racist iconography  |  Thorn

Mayor Greg Fischer says the John B. Castleman bronze is not a traditional Confederate statue because it does not celebrate slavery or secession. “That’s what is interesting about Castleman — it’s really led to a lot of nuanced debate about what this statue stands for. Those are the kind of issues I need to work through here,” Fischer told Courier Journal. Its fate is unclear.

Speaking of racists…  |  Thorn

“I’m about to go in and meet the members of The West Louisville chess club — not something you necessarily would have thought of when you think of this section of town,” Gov. Matt Bevin tweeted Tuesday.

It’s because Bevin can’t dance!  |  Thorn

We all know that Bevin, who has a degree in East Asian studies, hates teachers. Now, he thinks he is one. He told the Lane Report that universities (the same ones whose budgets he is cutting) must produce students who fit his mold. “No longer are we taking $1 billion worth of taxpayer money and just giving it to people to spend as they see fit, but rather we are saying to universities: There are certain metrics you need to meet, certain expectations, if you’re going to get taxpayer money … Frankly, interdisciplinary studies or interpretive dance … there aren’t jobs out there.” Then the governor added: Let the state poop out robots.
