The state Senate Education Committee moved forward SB 71, which would require students be taught abstinence and monogamy in sex-education classes. Sen. Julie Raque Adams, a Louisville Republican and the only woman at the hearing, voted no, while the measure passed on male votes. The bill says abstinence outside of marriage is “the expected standard for all school-age children” and “the only certain way to avoid out-of-wedlock pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and other associated health problems.” Opponents said such a law would shame girls into silence and prevent them from getting help. Perhaps equally as distressing: The panel was told the state has no guidelines for such classes, CJ reported.
Do the right thing, Bevin | Absurd
By the time you read this, we will know just how far Gov. Matt “Oblivious” Bevin has thrust the knife into the state budget. He is right (gasp!) to work to fund state pensions, but will he seek to desiccate Kentucky? Why not raise taxes on cigarettes and allow casino gambling? Why not find other ways to raise revenue, rather than taking away what makes the state liveable, if not great? We hope he recalls his previous State of the Commonwealth address when he said any plan “is not going to be a tax-neutral tax plan.”

We know newly elected Metro Council President David James will continue to push Mayor Greg Fischer (in an election year!) on public safety issues, but will he pursue his campaign to close what he called a sex club? Remember when he “found” an ID on the sidewalk in order to go undercover in a gay-friendly spa? We do.
Bad news beers | Thorn
Insider Louisville crowed that Yuengling beer may be coming to Kentucky, thanks to Jonathan Blue, whose Blue Equity owns a lot of liquor stores. Blue tweeted the news, prompting IL to write: “If a tweet could make a sound, it would be the mouthwatering eruption of compressed air a beer makes when its top is popped off.” Wow… It must be true: Drinking makes you forget.
