Dear Editor,
The time has come for LEO to acknowledged its complicity in the UofL sex scandal. Over the years LEO has spent a spectacular amount of ink popularizing and promoting the very mindset, behavior and lifestyle in which this scandal has its origin. This mindset is just one side of the counterfeit coin that makes up much of “our” culture when it comes to sex. One side of the coin is “traditional” beliefs and prejudices, whether Judeo-Christian, Islamic or other, carry-overs from the ancient world, as represented locally by the views of such as Kim Davis and Albert Mohler. The other side of the coin consists of an overt rebellion against those beliefs by the likes of Deja Vu Club, Rustic Frog and Play, etc. as advertised and promoted in LEO. These are the two sides of the same counterfeit coin, each side equally perverse. We all know which side of this coin LEO prefers. The real unanswered question here is why is LEO the only local publication to have made this choice. No legitimate journalistic publication in Louisville has been so juvenile as to have fallen for this obviously false dichotomy, only LEO. Perhaps the more thoughtful would see a more logical path motivated by love rather extreme reaction one way or the other, and perhaps see alternatives that have nothing to do with either side of the counterfeit coin. Perhaps the more thoughtful might also come to understand that on a planet so wildly over populated by humans that human sex just isn’t necessarily all that important. —Robert Bottom, Feb. 10

I think your points on harming the community are well made. But what I don’t understand is what the UofL crowd (full disclosure: I’m a UK grad and fan) would have the school do, assuming there is strong reason to believe a lot of rules were violated. The NCAA doesn’t have any authority over the actors who made the violations, hence they turn to the school and program. It’s difficult to conceive of a punishment which ultimately wouldn’t have significant ramifications for the city and community, in my opinion. So, if you were UofL, what punishment would you impose on yourself? —Taylor Mayer, Feb. 10

Pitino has already stated that he would give up his salary for a year plus not be allowed to coach in the postseason. The NCAA really needs to come up with a way to punish only the people involved. Either major fines, no matter where they are now, or possibly take away the scholarships and make them pay for their education in the form of student loans … I dunno.
