Matmos continue their storied tradition of genre-bending experimentation with The Marriage of True Minds, which again finds the pair working around a unified theme: telepathy. As much an art installation-meets-science project as an album, Minds finds them placing volunteer subjects into sensory deprivation, then trying to project their record into the volunteer’s mind. Any sound that resulted from the experiment — be that a melody or texture — was then either sampled or emulated, but always valued, creating an especially empathetic and moving record. Playing like a pop-conscious album by The Books, their newest effort finds the duo successfully blending cerebral knob turning and sample hunting with, dare I say, danceable melodies. The combination of the abstract and the emotional, mixed with the precision often present in electronic music, forms an album that is both artful and consciously unpretentious.
