Savage Loving
There is more to “Savage Love” than meets the eye. Dan Savage is an advocate for the LGBTQ community, the adoption community, and bullied youth. He promotes condom usage, regular STI testing and open communication between sexual partners. As the co-founder of the It Gets Better Project, he has drawn much needed attention to the appalling rate of suicide among gay teens. For those who might not be accustomed to his blunt language, it may take reading a few columns to get past that. I believe he provides insightful, frank and seriously hilarious advice to those who may not be able to find the information they are looking for elsewhere. And lastly, to cement his place in history, Dan Savage is the man who provided us with the true definition of “Santorum.” What’s not to love?

Not So Violent
In a Jan. 2 Inbox letter, Polk Culpepper refers to the United States as “the most violent nation on earth” as if it’s common knowledge. Polk, there are 186 countries on the planet. Did you really research the per capita violence rate in every one of them to arrive at a factual conclusion?
Neither have I, but I have researched a few of them. It’s easy, actually. It takes only a few minutes on the Internet: Armenia: 1.5 million people murdered. Cambodia: 3 million people murdered. Germany: 12 million people murdered. The Soviet Union: 23 million people murdered. China: 27 million people murdered. So you really think we outdo all of those countries? You really think you can back that up?
Oh, wait a minute, I’m sorry, I forgot. Those examples are all of violence committed by governments against their own deliberately and methodically disarmed populations, and we all know that doesn’t count toward being considered a “violent nation.” I feel like such a fool now. My bad, never mind, just forget I brought it up. Carry on, Polk.
