The new EP by this revamped local quintet defies easy categorization, though perhaps not always in the way intended. An offbeat blend of folk instrumentation, British lit, indie cute and prog-rock imagination, Entertainment shows Aby Laby Land at their brightest when they successfully tap into the spirits of The Kinks, XTC or Frank Zappa. For those less inclined to enjoy such intentionally quirky inspirations (with the hazard of occasionally approaching Barenaked Ladies turf), the subgenre’s boy-next-door vocals and sudden tempo shifts might be challenging even at 24 minutes; you’re either in or you’re out here. That being said, there are moments that make a listener sit up, even if it’s just for the never-before-heard sentiment I am your toilet seat/you are the ass that holds me down.
