In the July-August edition of Tape Op magazine, writer Alex Maiolo has a great Q&A with Brian Paulson. A recording engineer and producer in Carrboro, N.C., Paulson was behind the boards for the making of Slint’s landmark 1991 release Spiderland at River North Studios in Chicago. Based on the sound of that record, Jeff Tweedy and Jay Farrar enlisted him to help make Uncle Tupelo’s Anodyne. Paulson also tells a funny anecdote about Duran Duran singer Simon LeBon. Cancer (still) sucks!
Breaking Stride, The Noonans, Quiver of Jasper, Asylum on the Hill, J. Fox & the Parkinsons and The TuneSmiths rock to fight cancer Saturday, Aug. 7, at The Rudyard Kipling (422 W. Oak St., 636-1311). All proceeds from the benefit, now in its second year, go to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Louisville. Showtime at 8:30 p.m. Cover is $5, $8 if you’re under 21. For families, an earlier silent auction, meal and kid-friendly entertainment takes place at 6:30 p.m. for a $25 donation.
Part-timers wanted
The 2010 Kentucky State Fair will begin accepting applications for temporary workers on Aug. 9. They’re looking for maintenance staff, housekeeping, admission gatekeepers, tour guides and tram drivers. Wages start at $7.25 an hour, with some positions paying slightly more. The jobs run Aug. 18-29, and the Kentucky State Fair runs Aug. 19-29.
The first two days of hiring, Monday, Aug. 9, from 7 a.m.-4 p.m., and Tuesday, Aug. 10, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., will take place in South Wing C, Rooms 105-108, at the Kentucky Exposition Center. Applications also will be accepted at the State Fair Employment Trailer, near Gate 4 of KFEC off Crittenden Drive. Call 367-5235 for more information.
Soup Sandwich
Adam Greenwood (Lords), a standup comedian for the last few years at Comedy Caravan, is starting “Soup Sandwich,” a new underground comic night at Skull Alley (1017 E. Broadway) that will feature local and touring comics. The first Sandwich is served Aug. 9. Showtime is 8 p.m., cover is $5. Kyle Kinane and DJ Chad Castetter (Endpoint, Metroschifter) round out the bill.
