Sons and Daughters, Houses and Homes

Have you ever wondered what manic depression put to music would sound like? No? That means you had a happy childhood, have a healthy psyche, and you probably shouldn’t be concerned with rock ’n’ roll in the first place.

If you answered yes, The Foxery recorded an album for you. Sons and Daughters, Houses and Homes is dark, sad and entirely self-loathing. If it weren’t so good, it would be worrisome, like Nick Drake’s Pink Moon or Sylvia Plath’s “The Bell Jar.” Could these songs be a plea for help from mastermind Calvin Fackler? Vocally he recalls Morrissey at his mopey best on “Untitled: Strong” when he begins to wail: I’m selfish … I’m selfish … I’m selfish. The album is so depressing, that it’s almost disconcerting when it ends on a lone hint of optimism, “Black and White Film.”
