Tokyo Sex Destruction

If Nick Cave, Rage Against the Machine, Marvin Gaye and Bradley Nowell mixed their genes in a laboratory, Tokyo Sex Destruction might emerge. The nine songs on Singles continue the Destruction’s long-time collaboration with Santi Garcia and include the tour-de-force protest charges, “All people get ready!,” “Revolution” and “Power to the People.” Tunes like the bossanova “Summer Days” and the slow-swinging jazz of “When the Shadows Cross the River” are a welcome disruption from otherwise hard-pounding vocals and screeching guitar work (“No Reason, Nowhere,” “Your Best Friend is Dead”). “People in Me” and “Get On Your Knees” are the highlights, mixing thumping hardcore with blues-inspired soul, raw sexual vigor and a powerful, evocative call to action.
